How to help your loved one get out of bed

Milestone Home Care

Encouraging an aging parent to come out of bed can be a delicate matter, as you want to respect their autonomy while also ensuring their safety and well-being. Here are some tips that may help:

Be patient and compassionate: It's important to approach the situation with patience and compassion. Your aging parent may be experiencing physical or emotional challenges that make it difficult for them to get out of bed.

Understand their reasons: Try to understand why your parents are hesitant to come out of bed. They may be experiencing pain, fatigue, or depression. Understanding their reasons can help you address their concerns and find a solution.

Set a routine: Establishing a daily routine can help your parents feel more motivated to get out of bed. Encourage them to wake up at the same time each day, eat breakfast, and engage in activities they enjoy.

Make it comfortable: Make sure your parent's bed is comfortable and supportive. Consider adding a pillow or cushion for extra support, or investing in a bed rail or grab bar to help your parents get in and out of bed safely.

Encourage movement: Encourage your parents to engage in gentle exercises, such as stretching or walking, to help increase their strength and mobility. Consider enlisting the help of a physical therapist or other healthcare professional to create a safe and effective exercise plan.

Get outside help: If your parent is still hesitant to come out of bed, consider enlisting the help of a home health aide or caregiver. They can provide support and assistance with daily tasks, making it easier for your parents to get up and move around. (WE CAN HELP, CALL TODAY 817-905-3781)
